Wayne Messam, the candidate:
Meet Wayne Messam, democratic mayor of Miramar, Florida. Mayor Messam's presidential campaign can be summed up in one word: urgency. Like his slogan states, Messam believes change (political, cultural, ecological, economic) just cannot wait. From his campaign website:
The lack of urgency to plan for the future and take action on the crises we can see coming is the biggest threat facing our nation.
As you read this note, the gun violence epidemic continues to take far too many lives, climate change damages more homes and devastates more communities each year, skyrocketing healthcare costs cut off many Americans from the possibility of their American Dream, and crippling student loan debt leaves people of all ages with little hope for the future.
Washington is not working for the American people, and these big issues need fresh eyes and bold ideas from someone closer to the people, so our voice can be heard. Together, we can fundamentally change our country for the better and tackle these challenges with actions that match the scale and urgency of this moment.
Policy Positions:
- Student debt reform. Mayor Messam has a student debt cancellation plan that rivals Elizabeth Warren's, and it's listed first in the "Priorities"section of his website.
- Climate change. Wayne Messam speaks on the urgency of this issue with the same level of emotion as Jay Inslee. Contrary to Governor Inslee's intentions, he is NOT the only climate change candidate in this race. And Mayor Messam puts actions before words. In his life prior to politics, he ran a construction company and built the greenest school in Florida.
- Gun reform. Mayor Messam was one of five Florida Mayors who last year sued Governor Rick Scott for penalizing local officials who enacted municipal gun regulations.
- Abolishing the electoral college.
- Women's health. Here's the full, direct quote from this page of Mayor Messam's campaign website: "I trust women to make their own decisions when it comes to their health. Period."
Wayne Messam, the cocktail:
I noted earlier that Messam's candidacy is marked by a sense of urgency. For that reason, I decided to make him a cocktail that doubles as a coffee drink. As Wayne acknowledges, we are going to need a lot of energy to handle the work ahead. Beyond that, all I had in mind going into this cocktail was a sense that bourbon cream should be included. I'm satisfied with the result. This drink is lightly sweet and very coffee-forward.
How to make:
Combine...
50 ml apple flavored whiskey
40 ml bourbon cream
roughly 4 ounces iced coffee
...in a shaker over ice. Give the mixture a few shakes. Pour over ice in a rocks glass. Sip and enjoy!
