Kirsten Gillibrand, the candidate:
My goal for Senator Gillibrand's cocktail was to have something effervescent, light, sweet, and pink to match her campaign color. I *think* I have achieved that with this fun drink!
What's in the glass:
30 ml Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey
15 ml raspberry liqueur
45 ml blackberry lemonade
sprite (or any lemon-lime cola) to fill glass
Pour all ingredients into a highball glass over ice. Stir, sip and enjoy!
Have you watched Senator Gillibrand's campaign launch video yet? If you haven't, take a couple of minutes and do so now:
The Democratic Senator's campaign slogan, "Brave Wins,"is both a statement and a question. It asks: What does bravery mean in America? Has bravery always won? Will bravery win now? And it answers: Bravery means true equality (racial, economic, judicial, environmental). Bravery has NOT always won in America, but it CAN. And it SHOULD.
Senator Gillibrand is not the only 2020 Democratic candidate who put out a launch video, but by God, hers is the most inspiring. I'm not backing any horses yet, and I am not asking you to, but I submit that if you weren't fired up and ready to Fight the Good Fight by the end of that video, you might be dead. Or a Republican.
Policy Positions:
- A national paid family leave act. Senator Gillibrand has introduced legislation to create a national program of paid family leave in every congressional session since 2013. (You can read about the FAMILY Act on her website.)
- Women's health. The Senator from New York's positions on a number of issues have evolved over the course of her career (not a slight, just a fact), but her championship of a woman's right to choose and the vigor with which she fights against sexual assault and harassment haven't wavered in the least.
- Ethics in goverment. Senator Gillibrand is opposed to Citizens United, the landmark SCOTUS decision that precipitated a new era of unaccountable dark money infiltrating our political system, and wants it overturned. She has also passed legislation to prevent former government employees from profiting from information gained through their public service. (Read about the 2012 STOCK Act on her website.)
- Raising the federal minimum wage.
- Gun reform. This is an area where Senator Gillibrand has most evolved over her time in public office. She once had an A rating from the NRA, but through a combination of time, conversations with constituents, and just living in this country with such an epidemic of gun violence, she now has quite a different view and voting record. Kirsten Gillibrand boasts on her campaign website that the gun lobby now gives her an F rating.
